When It Rains, It Pours — But God Is Still My Shelter
When it rains, it pours.
I have heard that saying so many times, but there are seasons in life when you truly begin to understand what it means.
Sometimes, one thing happens after another.
Before you have had time to process one situation, something else comes. Before you have recovered from one blow, another arrives. You barely have time to catch your breath before life seems to knock the wind out of you again.
And somewhere in the middle of it all, you find yourself asking:
“Lord, how much more?”
This has felt like one of those seasons for me.
There have been beautiful moments — moments of joy, answered prayers and genuine reasons to give God thanks. There have been reminders of His goodness and evidence of His faithfulness.
And yet, alongside those moments have come unexpected pain, difficult news, loss and circumstances I simply cannot make sense of.
It is strange how joy and sorrow can sometimes occupy the same space.
You can be grateful for what God has done while grieving something you wish had never happened.
You can celebrate an answered prayer while still crying over another situation.
You can believe that God is good while quietly asking Him, “Why?”
And I am learning that none of those things cancels out faith.
Faith does not mean pretending
Sometimes we think being strong in faith means always having the right words, always being positive or somehow remaining untouched by what is happening around us.
But I don't believe that is what faith looks like.
Faith does not require me to pretend that everything is okay when it isn't.
Faith allows me to come before God exactly as I am and say:
“Lord, I don't understand this.
I don't like this.
This hurts.
I have questions.
But I still trust You.”
There is something freeing about knowing that I don't have to hide my pain from God.
He already sees it.
He knows the questions I cannot put into words. He sees the tears that come unexpectedly. He knows when I am tired of being strong and when all I have left is enough faith to whisper His name.
One truth remains
Through everything that has happened, I keep coming back to one truth:
God has not changed.
My circumstances may change.
My emotions may rise and fall.
There may be days when I feel strong and full of faith, and there may be days when I have just enough strength to put one foot in front of the other.
But God remains the same.
He is still faithful.
He is still good.
He is still present.
He is still my Father.
And He is still holding me, even when I cannot understand what He is allowing.
There is shelter in the storm
So yes, sometimes when it rains, it pours.
And sometimes we cannot stop the rain.
We cannot control what happens next. We cannot protect ourselves or the people we love from every painful experience. We cannot always understand why God allows certain things to happen.
But we can choose where we run when the storm comes.
The Bible reminds us:
A refuge is not a promise that the storm will never come.
It is a place of safety in the middle of the storm.
And perhaps that is what God is teaching me in this season.
Not that I will always understand.
Not that life will always be easy.
Not even that the rain will immediately stop.
But that when it pours, I know where my shelter is.
My prayer in this season
Father,
I cannot stop the rain, and I do not understand everything that is happening around me.
Some things hurt deeply. Some things leave me with questions I may never have answers to.
But today, I choose to run to You.
When I am overwhelmed, remind me that You are my refuge.
When I am tired, be my strength.
When I am afraid, remind me that You are with me.
When I cannot see what You are doing, help me to trust who You are.
Give me strength for today, grace for tomorrow and faith for everything I cannot understand.
And when the rain feels as though it will never stop, remind me that I am still covered, still held and still loved by You.
You are my shelter in the storm.
Amen.
