When the Answer Comes, but You Still Have to Wait

A middle-aged Black woman with short curly hair looking towards the horizon at golden hour, representing waiting on God, hope and trusting His appointed time.

There are seasons of life that we understand only when we are looking back.

While we are living through them, they can feel confusing, painful and uncertain. We ask questions. We wonder what God is doing. We pray for doors to open, circumstances to change and clarity to come.

I recently walked through one of those seasons.

It began with the ending of a chapter that had been part of my life for a long time. I won't go into the circumstances surrounding that season because the details are not really the important part of this story.

What matters is what God taught me through it.

“Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.” Psalm 27:14

When life doesn't go the way you expected

Sometimes an ending arrives differently from the way we imagined.

And even when we know that it is time to move forward, there can still be emotions to process.

I needed time.

Time to think. Time to pray. Time to understand what had happened.

And, perhaps most importantly, time to allow God to prepare my heart for whatever came next.

At the time, I couldn't see the whole picture. I could only see the chapter that was closing.

But God could see the next one.

God is never limited by what I can see.

We often judge our circumstances by what is happening today. God sees where today's circumstances are leading us.

Stepping into the unknown

Then came the search for what would come next.

Anyone who has searched for work knows that it can become a journey of its own.

You search. You apply. You wait. You hope.

Sometimes you hear something. Sometimes you hear nothing at all.

There are moments of encouragement and moments when you wonder how long the process is going to take.

Yet somewhere in that uncertainty, I made a decision to keep moving.

I couldn't control when the right opportunity would come, but I could continue doing what was in front of me while trusting God with what wasn't.

Looking back, I can see that this was an important part of the journey.

Faith doesn't always mean standing still and waiting for something to happen. Sometimes faith looks like taking the next step when you cannot see the entire staircase.

And then the door opened

Eventually, the opportunity I had been praying for came.

I had found a new job.

It felt like the answer.

After everything that had happened, I could finally see the beginning of a new chapter.

I was grateful. I was excited.

And I thought the waiting was over.

But it wasn't.

There were still processes that needed to be completed before I could begin. Things were moving, but I didn't know exactly when everything would be finalised.

So once again, I found myself waiting.

This time the waiting felt different.

I knew where I was going. I just didn't know when I would get there.

The waiting after the breakthrough

We often talk about waiting for an answered prayer.

We don't talk nearly as much about what happens when God has answered, but the answer hasn't fully arrived yet.

You have received the opportunity, but you're waiting for the next step.

You can see the door, but you haven't walked through it.

You know something new is coming, but you don't know exactly when it will begin.

That kind of waiting can test your faith in a completely different way.

During this season, there was a word that God impressed strongly upon my heart:

“Wait. It will happen at My appointed time. Not too late, just at the right time.”

Those words became something I held on to.

I didn't know when everything would finally fall into place. I didn't know how long I would have to wait. But whenever uncertainty began to creep in, I came back to that word: Wait.

Not because nothing was happening.

Not because God had forgotten me.

But because there was an appointed time.

“For the revelation awaits an appointed time... Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay.” Habakkuk 2:3

Looking back now, those words mean even more to me. What felt like a delay wasn't necessarily a delay from God's perspective. I was measuring the journey by my timetable; God was working according to His.

There were moments when I had to remind myself:

God has brought me this far. He isn't going to abandon me here.

The same God who opened the door could be trusted with everything that needed to happen before I walked through it.

Waiting on God is not wasted time

One of the greatest lessons from this season has been learning that waiting is not wasted time.

We often see waiting as the space between where we are and where we want to be.

But perhaps God sees it differently.

Perhaps waiting is also a place where He works.

A place where He restores us. A place where He teaches us. A place where He prepares us.

A place where He reminds us that our security is not found in a job, a title, a timetable or even in knowing what happens next.

Our security is found in Him.

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.” Isaiah 40:31

Notice that the verse doesn't say those who understand everything will renew their strength.

It says those who hope in the Lord.

There is a difference.

Faith doesn't require us to understand God's timetable. It asks us to trust His character.

Then came the confirmation

Eventually, the waiting ended.

Everything I had been waiting for was confirmed, and finally I had a date for the beginning of this new chapter.

And something else unexpected came with the news, another blessing I hadn't anticipated.

I smiled when I heard it because it felt like one of those gentle reminders from God:

I haven't forgotten you.

The journey had taken longer than I might have chosen.

The route wasn't one I would necessarily have planned.

There were difficult moments along the way.

But God had been present through all of it.

The ending. The uncertainty. The searching. The opportunity. The waiting. And finally, the confirmation.

The word He had given me had not changed:

“At My appointed time. Not too late, just at the right time.”

Looking back differently

I can now look back at the beginning of this journey differently.

What once looked simply like an ending now looks like a transition.

What felt like uncertainty became an invitation to trust God more deeply.

What felt like delay became preparation.

And what seemed like an uncomfortable chapter became part of the story God was writing.

That doesn't mean every difficult experience suddenly becomes easy when we look back.

Some things still hurt. Some questions may remain unanswered.

But we don't need every question answered before we can recognise God's faithfulness.

“Lord, I understand a little more than I did then.”

If you are waiting right now

Perhaps you are reading this from your own season of uncertainty.

Maybe a chapter has ended and you don't know what comes next.

Maybe you have been praying for an opportunity that hasn't appeared yet.

Or perhaps, like me, you have received the answer but you're still waiting for everything to fall into place.

Don't mistake God's silence for His absence.

Don't assume that nothing is happening simply because you cannot see movement.

Keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep taking the next step that is available to you.

And when anxiety tries to make you believe that everything depends upon you, remember that God was already standing in your tomorrow before you arrived at today.

And perhaps the word God gave me during my season of waiting is also the encouragement you need today:

Wait.
It will happen at God's appointed time.
Not too late.
Just at the right time.

A new chapter

As I prepare to step into this next chapter, I do so with gratitude.

Not because the journey here was easy.

But because God has reminded me once again that He is faithful.

There will undoubtedly be new challenges ahead. Starting something new always brings its own learning, stretching and growing.

But I am entering this season carrying something I didn't have in quite the same way before:

the testimony of what God has already brought me through.

And perhaps that is one of the gifts of difficult seasons.

When God brings us through them, we don't emerge empty-handed.

We carry evidence of His faithfulness into whatever comes next.

A prayer for the waiting season

Lord, thank You for the doors You close and the doors You open. Thank You for sustaining me when I don't understand what You are doing. Thank You for being present in the searching, the waiting and the uncertainty.

Help me to trust You when Your timing is different from mine. When I become impatient, remind me that You have an appointed time. When I cannot see what You are doing, help me to trust that You are still working.

As I step into this new chapter, help me not to forget what You taught me in the last one. May I trust Your timing, follow Your leading and always remember that my future is safest in Your hands.

Amen.

One final thought

If there is one thing I want to carry from this season into the next, it is this:

The waiting was not wasted.

What God had promised came at the appointed time, not too late, but at the right time.
