When God Feels Silent: Trusting Him When We Feel Forgotten
Have You Ever Felt God Is Far Away? Have you ever prayed and felt like God didn’t answer—or even like He wasn’t there at all? We all go through seasons where God feels silent. His voice seems quiet, our prayers seem unanswered, and it’s easy to feel forgotten.
Recognise your feelings
Sometimes life feels overwhelming, and we wonder if God has left us to face it alone. David knew this feeling well. In Psalm 13:1–2, he cries:
“How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and day after day have sorrow in my heart?”
David doesn’t hide his frustration or doubt. He brings his raw, honest emotions to God. And here’s the beautiful truth: God welcomes our honesty. He’s not offended by our questions or doubts—He desires a real, genuine relationship with us.
Shift from Despair to Trust
David doesn’t stay in despair. Later in Psalm 13:5–6, he chooses trust over doubt:
“But I trust in your unfailing love;my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for He has been good to me.”
He reminds himself of God’s character and past faithfulness—even when his feelings say otherwise. David teaches us that our emotions are real, but they are not the whole truth. God is never absent, never silent, and always at work behind the scenes.
Romans 8:28 echoes this promise:
“So we are convinced that every detail of our lives is continually woven together for good, for we are His children who have been called to fulfil His designed purpose.”
Even when we cannot see what God is doing, He is quietly working everything for our good.
Practical Steps When God Feels Silent
Here are some ways to hold onto God’s truth when He feels distant:
- Journal your feelings: Write down your prayers, doubts, and reflections. Be honest like David.
- Memorise Scripture: Anchor yourself in verses about God’s faithfulness.
- Talk to someone you trust: Share your struggles with a Christian friend or mentor.
- Remember God’s character: Silence is not abandonment, and delay is not denial.
Remember This
When God feels silent:
- Silence is not abandonment.
- Delay is not denial.
- God is working even when you cannot see His hand.
- His faithfulness doesn’t change.
- The God who has been faithful before will always be faithful again.
Feeling like God has forgotten you is normal, but Scripture reminds us that His silence is never His absence. Psalm 13 teaches us to bring our honest questions to God while anchoring ourselves in His truth. God is constantly shaping, strengthening, and preparing us for what’s ahead. Trust Him. His love is unfailing, and His faithfulness never changes.
