Finding Joy in Dark Places: When God Uses Our Struggles to Grow Us

Joy and suffering are two words we rarely expect to find together. When life is difficult, our natural response is often to ask, “Why is this happening?” We may believe that joy can only return when our circumstances improve and the painful season comes to an end.
However, Scripture presents us with a very different understanding of joy. Biblical joy is not dependent on everything going well. It is rooted in the assurance that God is present, faithful and working through every part of our lives.
Joy is not the absence of suffering. It is the presence of God.
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” James 1:2–3 (NIV)
A different perspective on trials
James does not tell us that suffering itself is enjoyable. He does not ask us to pretend that pain does not hurt or that disappointment is easy. Instead, he encourages us to consider our trials from a different perspective, to consider it pure joy whenever we face trials of many kinds.
At first, that sounds impossible.
How can we find joy in pain?
The answer lies not in the trial itself, but in what God is doing through it.
James explains:
"...because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." James 1:3
We can find joy during difficult seasons because we know that God is doing something deeper within us. The joy does not come from the trouble itself. It comes from knowing that the trial is not meaningless and that God can use it to strengthen our faith.
Every challenge, disappointment and season of suffering can become an opportunity for God to deepen our dependence on Him and shape us into the people He has called us to be.
God never wastes our pain.
God is more interested in our growth than our comfort
Our struggles are not meant to destroy us. In God’s hands, they can become instruments of transformation.
James explains that the testing of our faith produces perseverance. When we continue to trust God through difficult seasons, our faith becomes stronger. We learn how to remain faithful even when we cannot see the outcome.
“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:4 (NIV)
God is not simply trying to get us through our trials. He is using them to mature us, strengthen our character and make us more like Christ.
Sometimes the very thing we desperately want God to remove is the tool He is using to transform us. What feels like an interruption may be part of His preparation. What feels like a delay may be developing patience, perseverance and spiritual maturity within us.
Finding purpose in our pain
One of the greatest sources of hope during suffering is the knowledge that our pain can have a purpose.
When we believe that God is working behind the scenes, our perspective begins to change. Instead of only asking, “Why is this happening to me?” we can begin to ask, “Lord, what are You teaching me through this?”
Our struggles can become the place where God develops perseverance, character, spiritual maturity, deeper faith and a greater dependence on Him.
Difficult seasons can also reveal what we truly believe. They expose the areas where we have relied on our own strength and invite us to trust God more completely.
Our struggles are not meant to be avoided at all costs. In God’s hands, they can become part of our transformation and spiritual growth.
Joy comes from knowing God is with us
The world often defines joy as happiness based on favourable circumstances. We feel happy when life is comfortable, our plans succeed and everything appears to be going well.
Biblical joy is much deeper. It comes from knowing that God is with us even when life is painful. His presence becomes our anchor when everything else feels uncertain.
When we remember that God is walking beside us, suffering no longer has the final word. Our circumstances may be difficult, but we are not facing them alone.
God lovingly uses our pain, suffering and challenges for His purposes. He shapes us, strengthens us and draws us closer to Himself. This knowledge becomes an anchor when everything around us appears to be falling apart.
Choosing resilient joy
Resilient joy does not deny the reality of pain. It acknowledges the struggle while choosing to believe that God is still good, still present and still working.
We can choose joy in dark places because we know where our trials can lead us. They can lead us closer to Jesus. They can strengthen our faith, produce perseverance and deepen our spiritual maturity.
This kind of joy does not depend on receiving immediate answers. It rests in the confidence that God sees the complete picture, even when we can only see the painful moment in front of us.
My Reflection
As I reflected on James 1, I realised that I can find resilient joy even in dark places because I know that my suffering is not the end of my story.
Every hardship can strengthen my faith. Every trial can develop perseverance. Every challenge can deepen my spiritual maturity and draw me into a closer relationship with God.
Suffering shapes perseverance within my soul. It teaches me to rely on God rather than on my own strength. It reminds me that He is with me and that He can work even the most painful circumstances for my good.
My suffering is not the end. God is with me, and He is working it out for my good.
Final encouragement
If you are walking through a difficult season today, remember that your struggle is not meaningless.
God sees every tear. He knows every burden you carry. He understands the questions you cannot answer and the pain you may struggle to express.
He can use this season to strengthen your faith, refine your character and draw you closer to Himself. You may not understand the purpose today, but one day you may look back and recognise that even in the darkest places, God was faithfully at work.
Keep trusting Him. Keep seeking Him. Allow perseverance to complete its work in you.
True joy is not found in pretending that everything is fine. It is found in knowing that God is present in the middle of everything you are facing.
Reflection Questions
- Am I allowing my current struggles to draw me closer to God or further away from Him?
- What might God be teaching me through this difficult season?
- Where have I seen perseverance growing in my life?
- How can I choose joy today, knowing that God is present with me?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that You never waste our pain. Help me to trust You when life is difficult and to remember that You are using every trial to strengthen my faith and shape my character.
Teach me to find joy, not because of my circumstances, but because of Your constant presence. Give me the perseverance to keep trusting You, even when I do not understand what You are doing.
Use every challenge to draw me closer to You and help me to become spiritually mature and complete. Remind me that my suffering is not the end of my story and that You are working all things together for my good. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
